WELCOME TO WEST MELTON BOWLING CLUB

Welcome to the West Melton Bowling Club

West Melton Club members are proud of their bowling club and hope your time here with us is both enjoyable and fun.

Good bowling from us all.

Getting started:

Junior Status

When you start playing bowls and join a bowling club you are classified as an Under 5 bowler for the first 5 years. Under 5s may play in any open events but only Under 5s may play in specified Under 5s events. It is your choice how competitive or social you wish the game to be.

Club uniform and dress code

WMBC club shirts are available and you will probably want one of these sooner rather than later. If you are representing the club in interclub competitions you will definitely need one.

The club subsidises the cost of the first shirt for new members.  Additional shirts can be purchased if you require them.

Club jackets are available free for all club members. There is a stock of a range of sizes. To obtain one contact the Bar staff. These jackets should be returned if your membership ceases.

Coaching

As with all sports, some expert guidance helps you progress faster and adds to the enjoyment of the game. We have two coaches available and they hold regular coaching sessions at specific times during the week. These sessions are free.

Playing opportunities

Tournaments

Details regarding dates and conditions of regular and one-off Club tournaments are on the website and in the Yellow hardcopy booklet you will receive. Some of the Club competitions, eg the Club Triples, involve teams drawn randomly by the Match Convenors. Others, eg the Club Pairs, involve members asking colleagues to join in their team.

If you need assistance in joining a team - discuss with your “buddy” or the Mens/Womens Match Convenors whose contact details are on the website. You will also find the entry forms on the website.

Club days

These consist of Tuesday evenings at 6pm for ladies, Wednesday evenings at 6pm for men and Thursdays at 1pm for both men & ladies. You need to be at the club at least 15 mins before these start times. The Club Triples & Pairs competitions are also played on the club evenings.

Members are also welcome to practice or arrange their own games at any time when the greens are open and available. Check with the front page of the website for this information.

Interclub Competitions

The Match Convenors select and enter teams in various grades of the Bowls Canterbury Interclub matches that mostly occur on Saturday mornings, the under 5s occurring on a weekday evening. They occur at different club greens around Christchurch.

Playing interclub matches as part of a WMBC team is rewarding and enjoyable and playing at other greens is interesting and a good experience.

Farmers & other tournaments

There are reasonably frequent one-off all day tournaments run by various  Canterbury bowling clubs, including our club, during the season.

Club Facilities

Our club has excellent facilities that can be used by members and  visiting teams. These include a kitchen with accessories able to provide catering for large groups, a well stocked bar with certified bar staff and the latest television, audio-visual and sound equipment.

The facilities can also be used by community groups for social events. For more information on hiring the clubhouse and/or green go to Facility Hire on the website.

Greens

To preserve the quality and durability of our natural grass green for the whole bowling season the following rules apply:

  • Only flat shoes may be worn on the greens
  • Smoking, eating and drinking on the playing surface are not permitted.

The notice boards on the front of the clubhouse indicate whether the green is open or closed for play, the direction of play and the allocation of rinks for particular events including interclub matches.

Our Greens Advisor & Green Superintendent have sole authority re the management of the greens and whether they are playable on each day.

Match/event  information

You will find all relevant information on the website or on the whiteboard in the clubhouse. These will be updated after each mens/ladies club evenings. If you are not sure please ask the appropriate Match Convenor or your “buddy” member.

Security

All WMBC members have a responsibility to ensure the Club building is secure. Please be diligent at all times and make yourself familiar with the lock up protocol.
